In the past three months, we've had 4 interns joining the Phoenix team during their semester break. They are Calvin and Sean from University of Melbourne, via the Global Student program and Sonny and Alexis from Monash University. Even though it was a short period, we hope the interns had managed to learn a lot from the supervisors as it'd been a two-way relationship. The supervisors also obtained different insights while working with them.
They've shared their experiences here while they were in KSM.
Sonny He, Year 3 Mechanical Engineer Student, Monash University
As a non-local, interning at KSM has been an unbelievable experience. I started with zero idea on what to expect in terms of working culture here in Malaysia, but the team was extremely accommodating and helped me settle in quickly. Acoustics is a very niche field, and although I had little knowledge in the field before starting, I was working within an environment that allowed me to thrive and learn quickly. At the end of this internship, I can now say that I have a much better understanding of the field itself, simulation software relevant to the field, and the soft skills required while working in a professional environment. This kind of invaluable experience cannot be taught in class, and will remain with me for the rest of my future career. I have developed such a good working relationship with my colleagues here, and it will be hard to say goodbye. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here, and I wish everyone at KSM all the best for the future!
Calvin Kai Jin, Lim, Master of Engineering (Mechanical), University of Melbourne
Before beginning my internship at KSM, I had little to no knowledge on silencers and all I knew about sound was from high school where I learnt about the speed of sound being 343 m/s and that sound propagates through a medium as longitudinal waves. However, going through my internship at KSM opened my learning to the completely foreign field of acoustics. In the short span of 2 and a half months, I have learnt about how silencers work in an industrial setting, the many factors that affect their performance, as well as certain criteria that requires adhering to, for example the pressure drop across a silencer. Besides that, I was also forced to learn how to perform flow simulations to determine all sorts of different data, which I never got the chance to in university.
Other than that, I got to gain and improve on a few professional and workplace communication skills. As well as meet and work with a lot of friendly and welcoming people. I have formed a good bond with the people in my department and am disappointed to have to leave so soon.
All in all, I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to do an internship at KSM in the Phoenix division, as I was able to learn and experience a lot of things that cannot be taught in the classroom. I will cherish the time I had here and wish everyone at KSM all the best in the future.
Sean Heng Kee Kiang, Master of Engineering (Mechanical), University of Melbourne
Looking back at the time I have spent at KSM Group, I have gained much more knowledge,
experience and friendships that I could have expected. From the beginning, the Phoenix team have been wonderful in helping me get up to speed and integrating into the company
environment. With their guidance, I was able to learn a significant amount about the noise
control industry which gave me a deep appreciation for the field. I also had the opportunity to contribute to the team with simulations and calculations for various projects. My most
memorable contribution was seeing a component I helped design that was fully built and ready to be shipped off at the manufacturing facility.
Despite all the knowledge gained, I would have to say the best part of my internship experience were the people at KSM Group. Without them, this experience would not have been as fun and memorable as it has been. Even though it feels like I just joined yesterday, I definitely enjoyed the time I spent at KSM Group. I wish everyone at KSM Group success in all future endeavours and thanks for allowing me to be a part of the team!
Once again, thank you for spending the time here and we wish you all the best in the rest of your academic years.
Alexis Ing, Year 3 Mechanical Engineer Student, Monash University
Being an intern under the Phoenix division in KSM group is part of a significant experience, I am able to thrive from this working experience. I am pleased that people here are friendly and open minded. They give off a positive vibe which allows me to blend into the working environment quickly. Before joining this company, I have little to no knowledge regarding this field (noise control) and how remarkable those products benefit the environment. After working on tasks like choosing the correct model and sound attenuation for MRT tunnel ventilation system, noise calculation and designing and finding solutions to new products sparks my interest into learning new knowledge as well as gaining one’s confidence, independence and resourcefulness. It is something out of the university’s coursework. It is upsetting that my time around this company is quite short, as there are much more stuff yet to learn. However, I appreciate and cherish the chance to work here and the guidance given. It truly is an amazing learning experience. All the best to everyone at KSM Group, may this company prosper and enjoy much success in the future!
KSM Group are specialists in the Electrical, Instrumentation, Noise and Vibration control sectors, dedicated to making environments smarter and more efficient. Established in 1983, KSM Group has since evolved from a humble electrical company to trusted distributed and partner to some of the world’s biggest brands. In addition, we design and manufacture our Phoenix range of in-house noise control equipment. We are the first local manufacturer of top quality blowdown silencers. We achieve ISO 9001 recognition in 2000, a global standard for quality management systems. Our testing lab is the first in Malaysia for air distribution system silencers based on ISO 7235.
